She was a frightful tarantula the size of a ram and with the head of a sad maiden” (372). The first initial question for the reader is how could parents wish that to their daughter? Next was how the angel was laying in mud. People usually think that angels wear all white, and how they’re supposed to be spotlessly clean. Instead of being all nice and clean, the old man is laying in mud, which would make him filthy. In the story it says, “The light was so weak at noon that when Pelayo was coming back to the house after throwing away the crabs, it was hard for him to see what it was that was a very old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn’t get up, impeded by his enormous wings.” (Marquez 1).…

The short stories “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children” by Gabriel Marquez and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell uses imagery to create a tone that helps readers understand the theme of each story. In “A Very Old Man,” Marquez’s tone conveys the negative effects of high expectations. Cornell’s tone in “The Most Dangerous Game,” however, conveys tension and suspense for the unknown. The theme of “A Very Old Man” illustrates how society’s expectations on appearance lead to a lack of value for those who do not meet their expectations. The theme of “The Most Dangerous Game,” on the other hand, illustrates how people’s survival instincts can be challenged by highly advanced individuals who seek entertainment through…

The story of A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Marquez presents an array of characters. Marquez distracts away from the main character, the angel, by mentioning so many characters but at the same time shines a theoretical light on the angel. The most interesting question is not that of why the narrator mentions so many others but why these characters treat the angel in such a horrid manner. Many factors lead to why exactly such evil practices ridicule the angel such as human doubt by high officials, greed, and the monotony of life.…
