Whatever you do, just be sure that it gives you a chance to detach from your surroundings and allows you to clear your

As the assignment requires we write an annotated bibliography of a newspaper article, and since an annotated bibliography requires in-depth knowledge on the subject, I knew exactly which article to write about. This past April I performed with Shakespeare Carolina in their production of The Winter’s Tale; we received a sparkling review from Charlotte’s toughest critic, Perry Tannenbaum. Since this was such a joyous occasion for the entire cast, I knew it would be fitting to annotate this review for my assignment, as I can use my personal connection with the article to truly illustrate the content. First, I pulled the newspaper from my personal records and read it once again in order to remind myself of every detail of the article. I then critically…

*Sigh* It's that time of year again and no I'm not talking about the joys of Black History Month. It's February, which means good old Valentines Day is getting ready to rear its ugly commercialized head in every aspect of our lives. From being visually assaulted in the drug store while grabbing tampons, or losing your mind trying to get the latest themed Makeup Collection; Valentines Day can drive you crazy if you aren't crazy in love. For me, this time of year is particularly painful as it was this time last year I was dumped by my EX only a few weeks after I moved to NYC. Not only was a single with no friends, I didn't have the self-love necessary to see the blessing of being alone.…

Margarette Bailon Ms. Massa AP English Literature Period 4 Set during one of the most well known historical events, Robert Bolt's infamous play A Man For All Seasons, explores the power that religious beliefs and the law hold over society and the struggle to maintain control over both aspects of life. The central character, Thomas More, deeply contrasts the antagonist of the play, Thomas Cromwell, in his understanding of power. More as a man with a strong sense of self and as a righteous Catholic is arguably the only character who does not care for gaining more power. Whereas, his foils Cromwell and Rich are power hungry enough to do anything, including put aside their morals and God, to attain more power until their unsatisfiable appetites…

A Man for All Seasons, a play by Robert Bolt, centers its plot around the real-life story of Sir Thomas More, a man who pays the ultimate price for prioritizing his conscience rather than following the status quo of adhering to the demands of those of a higher power. During More’s time in jail, he converses with the jailer who does not agree with More’s reasoning, stating that it’s always “better [to be] a live rat than a dead lion”. This statement that is presented to More by the jailer, an individual portrayed by the Common Man, is significant in understanding the overall plot of the play due to the fact that it not only instigates debate over whether or not More was correct in going against King Henry’s wishes, but it also helps to demonstrate…
