Old Man and The Sea vs Finding Forrester Ernest Hemingway once wrote in his popular story The Old Man and The Sea,“Man can be destroyed but not defeated.” This can relate so clearly to not only the story, but another film, Finding Forrester. With each story, there were two very diverse plot lines. However, they seem to meet exceptionally when it comes to a variety of examples, including the relationships between the characters, the main characters’ courageousness, and the theme application to the protagonists. In both the novel and the film, there is some sort of mentor and student relationship. In The Old Man and The Sea, Santiago is the teacher, while Manolin is the student. In Finding Forrester, Mr. Forrester would be the mentor, with Jamal being his student. There aren’t as many similarities between the two, besides the fact that they are both involve a sort of teacher/student relationship and the way the student helps the teacher. He continued to push through all of those hardships, and ultimately survived at the end of the story. This theme of never being defeated definitely applies to Santiago, but can also apply to Mr. Forrester. In the majority of the film, it’s shown that Mr. Forrester hid away after his story was published, and didn’t communicate with hardly anyone. When Jamal arrived, his hardships seemed to fade away, and he was getting more comfortable being himself again. Despite the lack of stories written after his first one, he continued to write. This shows that even though he may have been “defeated” after his first novel, he continued to do what he loved, without the need to publish anymore.
