The theme of this poem is the loneliness of an animal. This help convey the theme of solitude. As the ‘old man platypus’ is a lonely creature. Other themes that was conveyed in the poem is happiness. Evident which states of ‘The old man platypus’ being happy is shown in stanzas 2 and 3. The poem display ‘The old man platypus’ for having a wife, son and a daughter. As it was stated in stanzas 3 “With his wife and his son and daughter”, assuming that of ‘The old man platypus” for being happy for having a family. Others evidence that was shown in the poem was “Safe in their burrow below the falls, they live in a world of wonder,” which can conclude that the “old man platypus” is happy for being in a safe burrow. In this poem Banjo mentions many aspects of the bushlands and rivers in the outback, and is trying to convey the beauty of Australia in this poem.
