Old Man Perseverance

One of Hemingway's best known short stories is The Old Man and The Sea. This story it about ,not surprisingly, a old man, named Santiago, who goes out on the Caribbean to fish. The old man faces many difficulties in which he tries to overcome . He struggles with many things including a marlin, sharks, mother nature, and himself. Through these struggles Hemingway shows that it is key to keep trying no matter how little chance you have for success. From this comes many themes including be willing to go the extra distance, perseverance is key, be proud about what you are, the honor is in the struggle, and success is not always winning stuff. These are just a small list of themes that come from this main idea. One of the more interesting Themes of this book is that honor is won through the struggle, the perseverance, and fight. The first thing he gets on his line is a small tuna which he saves for later but this was not the great fish he was hopping for. It was only after many hours of nothing that he first felt the tug of a marlin. Soon after hooking it all the way he found out about the raw power of the great fish for it easily towed both him and his boat out to sea. See the power of the fish did not however diminish his hope of catching him inside it strengthened his determination of caching it. For three day the fish towed Santiago around with varying amounts of fighting and tugging on the line. During the battle both Santiago and the fish get hurt, Santiago has his hand cut, then he could feel the fish jurk as it got hurt. Even after this they both keep fighting and waiting for the other to give up. During this time santiago shows his endurance and determination in caching the great fish.
