“When nothin’ is goin’ right Just go fishin’.” This quote was said by famous fisherman Earl Dibbles Jr. This is exactly what Santiago does he. When nothing is going right he just goes fishing. Even when fishing is not going right he just keeps fishing. Santiago is the protagonist in Ernest Hemingway’s novella The Old Man and the Sea, he is characterized as determined. In being determined he is fearless in his attempts to catch fish, he is enduring in how he keeps trying even after defeat, and he is truth-seeking in how he finds himself through all his hardships.
Santiago as a fearless fisherman will do what no other man will do to prove himself to all the people who doubt him. Everyone thinking that Santiago is a failure just drives him to not be afraid to sail out farther than any man will go. He does this because he knows that the biggest fish are the farthest away. During Santiago’s fight with the marlin he says, “You are killing me, fish. But you have right to. Never have I seen a greater, or more beautiful, or a calmer or more noble thing than you, brother. The first example in how Santiago is enduring is that he goes 84 days without catching a single fish. Every day he went out and always returned a failure, but he never gave up. Then he endures a long and grueling battle with a marlin ultimately to watch sharks eat it. But after he fails again he say, “To hell with luck, I’ll bring the luck with me.” (125).
