They were different because they were one of the poorest people in Europe. They came to America to escape the hardships and start a new beginning, with the hopes of actually succeeding. They faced discrimination, nobody wanted them there because they were willing to work for lower wages. Most cities were too crowded for the people already living there. They had dark, cold, and not ventilated “living spaces” that were only 9 foot by 11 foot. They had no running water, it was completely unsanitary, and daylight was nonexistent in the spaces. The contributed to the building of American railroads and industries. Since they worked for lower wages, factories could afford to operate and eventually profit.
