The government then makes a new rule indicating if you say something the SOS men don't like they can shoot you on sight. The grandfather then decides the government has taken away the meaning of the American flag. The next day at breakfast the grandfather runs out into the street and tries to trigger a rebellion. He holds the flag up in the air and shouts his ideas on the new and previous rules. As the SOS men are appearing the grandfather holds up the flag and lights a match to burn the flag. Even though the flags are fire resistant he keeps trying until the SOS men come and shoot him dead. The governments take control of everything in the town or even world. In “Old Glory” the government is referred to the SOS men and in “Harrison Bergeron” the government is referred to as the HG men. In “Old Glory” the role the government plays is to keep everyone in overwhelming command. In “Harrison Bergeron” the government plays the role of assigning handicaps and creating restrictions. To continue on “Old Glory” the grandfather wants to express what he believes is right but the government stops him by killing him because the government doesn't agree with him. They kill the grandfather and it is normal for them. In the short story, the author states, “The men lifted their laser rifles. The leader counted to three, and they fired in unison. The government is overly aggressive. This really could be something that happens in the future as people become more powerful.
