Old Boy Monologue

Upperclassmen were glaring competitively at each other, while freshman gave anxious glances to their circumferential milieu. There was one exception to this. It was the blond headed boy who greeted me. I walked next to him and exchanged formalities. I civilly introduced myself with my name. "Hi, i'm damp."

"Hodges." He replied succinctly

“Are you nervous for the Pt test?” I asked with feigned concern.

He gave a slight pause, skimming over me. “No, not really.”, he responded nonchalantly with a shrug.

By appearance, he was ostensibly unathletic. I smirked at him, as I knew he would soon be put back in his place.

He gave me a sidelong glimpse, before speeding up anew. I overcame the rift between us once more. This continued untill we ended up in a full-out sprint. By the last 100 meters my thighs were throbbing. Hodges had a look of affliction sprawled on his face, but he was steadily gaining ground. I put everything I had into the last stretch, trying to overcome the metaphorical crevice seperating us. This attempt was to no avail, however. Hodges beat me by a total of 7 seconds.

As I stammered towards the bathrooms, I contemplated on the possibility of him replacing me on A-team. The water break provided some respite from the arduous run, but it did not pacify my brooding

Three Years Ago "Mr. Atkinson," Mr. Anderson shouted. My eyes tore from Brandon's and to the teacher. "Don't do that to Mr. Davis. “Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day.
