Response Assignment 2 on The Life of Olaudah Equiano
The Life of Olaudah Equiano is an autobiography written by a former slave Olaudah Equiano. His main purpose in creating his autobiography was to abolish the slave trade, and it deemed as a success in gaining support of his abolitionist views. Along with being a story of the many obstacles and mini triumphs of being a slave it also shows the impact of religion within Equiano Olaudah’s life. Equiano’s religious views shifted from the beliefs adopted from his home land to being converted to Christianity. Religion is a central theme within the autobiography The life of Olaudah Equiano and influenced the course of the novel and Equiano’s life. Equiano was first introduced to the Christian god at a young age, while in England and experiencing his first ever snowfall. He became curios of the snow and was given answers by an Englishman who stated God created it. At this time Equiano was only aware of the beliefs of his home country in Africa, so he became curious of this new god that was spoken of. Many years had passed and Equiano was still enslaved but grateful to have kind masters. He became aware of the belief of Christianity that if you were not baptized, you could not enter heaven. Religion impacted every aspect of Equiano’s life, and definitely is an important and overarching theme in his autobiography. By practicing Christianity Equiano, was able to spread his abolitionist views on a scale much wider than if he did not accept the religion of his captors. Overall religion impacted and was beneficial to Equiano’s life by not only freeing his soul from his physical restraints, but by allowing him to further his views by gaining a certain degree of acceptance for a slave into the European
