Olaudah Equiano As A Story Of A Hero

Decent Essays
A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom. In class we were asked to read three stories The Crisis No. 1, Speech to the Second Virginia Convention, and The Life of Olaudah Equiano and from the stories I saw that freedom today is a lot different from freedom in those stories. In America today we take for granted our freedom unlike Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, and Olaudan Equiano who fought for our freedom and did not take it for granted, if those three people saw how much people discriminate others they would be offended because there hard work did not change much, and Americans has lost their faith in God and more and more are losing their faith every single day. We as a country take for granted out liberty rather than the people who came to America and …show more content…
Patrick Henry was willing to die fighting for our freedom and if he saw how Americans treat others just because of their race he would be disappointed and would feel like nothing much has changed from the time he was alive. Thomas Paine was once arrested because he was in France ,during the French Revolution for being an Englishman. Thomas Paine fought our freedom very hard and believed that God loves everyone. He said “God may bless you. It matters not where you live, or what rank of life you hold, the evil or the blessing will reach you all”(157) this shows that in God’s eyes it doesn’t matter what you look like or anything like that and I believe Thomas Paine was a strong believer in that and he would be disappointed in the discrimination in America today. Olaudah Equiano, who was sold to Africans and then sold to Englishmen to be a slave, definitely be disappointed in how America discriminates people just because they are white or black. All three of these people would be disappointed in the way Americans treat other

Are you familiar with what a primary source is? A primary source is a story that comes directly to you from the author who lived that story a long time ago. An Egyptian might have written a story, and that story today would be a primary source. In class, these past two weeks have been full of primary source stories. The stories are “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano,” by Olaudah Equiano and “La Relacion,” by Cabeza de Vaca.…

Hold so many hundred thousand in slavery; and annually enslave many thousands more, without any presence of authority, or claim upon them? How just, how suitable to our crime is the punishment with which Providence threatens us? Whether, then, all ought not immediately to discontinue and renounce it, with grief and abhorrence? Perhaps some (slaves) could give them lands upon reasonable rent, some; employing them in their labor still, might give them some reasonable allowances for it. The past treatment of Africans must naturally fill them with abhorrence of Christians; lead those to think our religion would make them more inhuman savages, if they embraced it; thus the gain of that trade has been pursued in oppositions of the redeemer's cause, and the happiness of…

Slavery into North America started in the eighteenth century. Steven Mintz writes, “between 9.6 and 10.8 million Africans arrived in the Americas.” The death rate of slaves at that time was about ten to twenty percent. Only a few slaves during that period had the opportunity to learn to read and write. Slavery would later become a large problem in North America and lead to what we call the Civil War.…

Being free is better than being enslaved, right? Freedom is the ultimate goal many, who are enslaved, want to obtain. At least that’s what some think who really are not enslaved and do not see the day-to-day struggle they face. There is nothing like having the independence to say and do as one pleases. Often time’s free blacks did not have that freedom and many narratives show just that.…

Olaudah Equiano’s autobiography The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano sheds an extraordinary amount of light and transparency on the institution of slavery during the 1700s, as well as, to an extent, the systems of enslavement that existed previously, both within America and in Africa. Equiano detailed his life before he was sold into slavery via the Atlantic slave trade, describing how slavery, a milder, drastically different version than what occurred in America, did exist in the region he was born, in what was called the Kingdom of Benin. Prisoners of war and adulterers, for example, were typically the ones taken into bondage, already depicting a clear distinction between Europe and Africa. To Europeans, slavery was “a purely economic…

For many centuries, slavery was one of the common practices among many nations that affected many innocent individuals. As a result, it influenced writers to reveal the horrors of slavery despite the white-superiority society they lived in. In his autobiography, “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African”, Olaudah Equiano focuses on his own experiences as a slave that motivated him to take a political stance in the abolition of slavery. Slavery had tragically affected Equiano’s childhood, as he was not able to escape from the new environment he was forced upon or return to his homeland to his family. At a young age, Equiano and his sister were kidnapped from their homes as “two men and…

In 1789, 23 years after buying his own freedom, Olaudah Equiano published The Interesting Narrative of the LIfe of Olaudah Equiano, his autobiographical slave narrative beginning with the day he was stolen from his home and forced into a life of perpetual movement (James 1-2). While this constant movement could be characterized as constant migration, it is typically a conscious decision to pick up one's life and restart it in a new setting. It is a journey traditionally looked upon with optimism. It is a journey taken with the hope that there is a better life somewhere out there. Yet in the case of Olaudah Equiano and many other Africans sold into slavery, this migration was not an independent, conscious decision.…

Through such themes, the constant joys and struggles of life are divulged. For instance, the theme of hypocrisy is introduced in a multitude of 19th century sources, including speeches and poems. However, the theme of hypocrisy is expanded upon in March by the characters of Mr. March and Marmee, as their ideals often juxtapose their actions. Hence, both March and the different primary sources combine to demonstrate the timeless theme of hypocrisy, addressing the notion of what is promised and what is truly given.…

In 1789, Olaudah Equiano published his autobiography entitled, The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa, the African. The purpose of the book was to aid the abolitionists in their struggle to abolish slavery. From the beginning of the book, it is apparent that the intended audience of the book are Christians. A quote from the book of Isaiah, containing “Behold, God is my salvation ,” preluded Equiano’s narrative that detailed his life, beginning with his kidnapping as a young boy in Africa, the voyage across the Atlantic to the Caribbean Islands, and his adventures travelling the world as a slave aboard one of England’s warships. In fact, Equiano’s book established a large audience among Christians and some English royalty, which is clear by the attached list of subscribers to the narrative.…
