Cultural collisions between different groups of people that are forced to live together are bound to happen, especially if those two groups have completely different ways of life. Chinua Achebe depicts what cultural collision can do to two different groups of people in his novel Things Fall Apart between the main character Okonkwo and the colonizers that come to his village, Umuofia. Okonkwo, an aggressively over-masculine, hot-tempered, traditional man, comes to face his old traditions and ways of life crumbling and falling apart before his very eyes, as colonizers plague Umuofia with their religious beliefs and customs. Cultural traditions are deeply rooted in old cultures but when something or someone interferes with these traditions it…

One mistake Okonkwo makes is how in trying to be unlike his father, he becomes an angry, violent and aggressive man. This is one mistake that is definitely contributing to Okonkwo’s demise as it leads him to do irrational things and treat his family badly as well as treating himself badly even though he has achieved such wondrous things in his lifetime. Okonkwo’s also got many other failures of himself and one of those being how he has such excessive pride and is also such a traditional man that he is not able to accept what the missionaries have done to his village during his time away in “motherland” because he was banished from the village for 7 years. This was one of the big mistakes that Okonkwo made because he wasn 't able to accept how his village was being changed and he couldn 't do anything about it which was one of his past mistakes before he ended his life. One of Okonkwo’s first big mistakes in the book was how he partook in the killing of Ikemefuna after he was instructed to not by the higher ups in the spiritual respect of the tribe.…

Nnoromele interprets the suicidal act as, “an ultimate expression of the compound effects of his own experiences in his unflinching desire to become a hero” (Nnoromele 280). However, he misconstrues Okonkwo’s deviation from his duty to his village and clan as an inevitable result of his pursuit to be a hero. Okonkwo was so fixed on attaining the title of a hero, that he resorted to death rather than challenging the imperial powers that were encroaching Umuofia. However, in doing so, he prioritized his personal desires over the welfare of his clan, an act far more egotistical than valiant, especially by the Igbo standards. Regardless of the motive, suicide itself is condemned in the Igbo culture and those who kill themselves are prohibited from being touched or properly buried.…
