Okonkwo In Things Fall Apart

Improved Essays
In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo is a sympathetic character because he does seem to care about other people other than himself but, he also does not want to be seen as weak, so he will do anything needed to not be seen as weak. Okonkwo didn’t eat food for two days since the death of Ikemefuna. Okonkwo does seem to care about other people other than himself because when Ezinma was taken into the cave, he could not sleep, he would constantly walk back and forth waiting to see if she would come out of the cave. Okonkwo shows he cares for others: “’Go home and sleep’ said Okonkwo. I shall wait here” (78). Okonkwo shows how much he cares for others because he is choosing to stay and wait for Ezinma to come out of the cave.

I think the way Okonkwo treats his family and his reasoning he has in doing it makes him a sympathetic person. First off, Okonkwo hits his wife, Ojiugo after she comes home late. In the book it says this on page 29 paragraph 5. “He walked back to his obi to await Ojiugos return.…

What is a tragic hero? According to Aristotle, a tragic hero is a literary, noble character who makes a judgment mistake that eventually leads to his/her downfall. In the book Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo is our tragic hero. Okonkwo is considered a tragic hero due to his leadership and eventual nobility, his big reverse as a character, and his tragic flaws that lead to his downfall. First of all, Okonkwo starts off as a poor child as shown when the book states “Okonkwo did not have the start in life which many young men usually had, he did not inherit a barn from his father.…

“Sacrifices have to be made” Acts Of Sacrifice By: Lars Jorgensen In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe our main character Okonkwo is constantly facing sacrifices that must be made to improve the lives of his people and himself. Taking a man's life in order to not look weak is not the true meaning of sacrifice, its giving apart of you to the world around you for a benefit for you or your peers. Everyone has responsibilities that have to be carried or else some sort of consequence will occur sooner or later, and with those responsibilities come sacrifices. For example maybe you have a essay due at 11:59 but you really want to go out with your friends to hangout, so therefore you have to make a sacrifice either go hangout with your friends and get a bad grade or turn it in and get a good grade, so therefore you have to see what you”ll gain or lose from the outcome of…

The book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe focuses on the character Okonkwo, his family and the Ibo tribe. The book Things Fall Apart gives many examples of how Okonkwo has failures and consequences for his failures and then has to live with these consequences and their negative effects. Many examples of this show up throughout the novel such as him killing another tribesman by accidentally shooting off his defective old gun and this has him and his family getting banished from their tribe. Okonkwo is a well-decorated tribesman and warrior who has based his life off of not being a failure and considered weak as his father was before him. Many times in life, as well as literature, people make choices and must live with the consequences…

Because of this fear Okonkwo believes that he constantly has to be powerful and strong in every aspect of his life otherwise, he would be just like his father. This belief leads to the horrible and unfair treatment of the people around him. Not only does Okonkwo treat his fellow tribe members with disrespect but, he also abuses his wives and children. So much that at one point in the passage, Okonkwo gave his wife “a sound beating and left her and her only daughter weeping” (Achebe 38) after blaming his wife for killing a banana tree. Okonkwo is too focused on not showing any emotions or weakness once exhibited by his father that he abuses his family to cover it up just like he did at that point.…

Title Cultures have a variety of customs, and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe literates the customs of an African tribe well. Currently I am at the part where Okonkwo beat one of his wives during the Week of Peace because she was out getting her hair plaited. The actual violence did not surprise me awfully because females have been oppressed for centuries through a multitude of ways from systemic tyranny to violence. What struck me as fascinating is the fact that a man’s success is determined by the number of wives he has, and not solely on the amount of wealth he has, although it is important. Okonkwo has three and is respected throughout the village; however, there is a man more respected called Nwakibie who has nine wives.…

Protagonist of Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo witnesses the white men bring changes to his clan and attempt to colonize them for conquest. Described as “a man of action”, Okonkwo seemingly falls short of his reputation when he commits suicide at the end of the novel (10). Commonly viewed as succumbing to a hereditary disposition of femininity and weakness, this death is thought of as a failure on Okonkwo’s behalf, as something within the clan which fell apart like the title and epigraph suggests. However, Okonkwo’s death is moreover a heroic ending for a man of honor and strength if one focuses on the further consequences. Willing to stand up for his beliefs and prevent unnecessary conflict, Okonkwo kills himself in a final attempt to correct the…
