Okonkwo is well respected warrior of the Umofia clan and he is undefeated, he brought honor to his village once he defeated “the cat” in a wrestling contest. Okonkwo is feared by many because he is strong and doesn’t fear anything. On one of his battle he cut of five heads the enemies men and drank wine from one of the dead man’s head. He has a huge family, he has three wives and eleven kids. Okonkwo family fears him as well and Okonkwo expects more from them. His family cannot embarrass him in any way including his son Nwoye that has a strong resemblance of Okonkwos father. Unoka was Okonkwo father, Unoka is practically the polar opposite of his son Okonkwo, Unoka was famous for his ability to play the flute, but that was when he was young. Later on as an adult he started to worsen. Unoka became lazier; he didn’t want to do his work. Okonkwo was commanded to do everything for his father, which angered him the most, being lazy wasn’t his worst trait. Unoka had the tendency to be in debt with almost everyone in the village. Knowing that his father almost ruined the family reputations he doesn’t want to risk it anymore and wants to make sure his son Nwoye doesn’t end up like his father. Nwoye is a lazy son that prefers to stay in one place and not do anything rather than to do something productive with his life. The villagers fear Okonkwo for the same reason his family fear him, Okonkwo is always angry. I predict that Okonkwo is always angry because of his father that is why he is beating Nwoye and forcing him to do more stuff because Okonkwo knows he can do better and that he will lead his family to the next

”(Archebe, 4). This bothers Okonkwo because he sees this as unsuccessful and he has no patience for that in men. Okonkwo himself is very successful being the greatest wrestler in the nine villages, a wealthy farmer, had two barns full of yams, and just married his third wife. Okonkwo’s father, Unoka was also in debt with many neighbors. “If any money came his way, and it, seldom did, he immediately bought gourds of Palm-wine, called round his neighbors and made merry.…

In “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo is dominated by his fear of weakness and failure. In the tribe where Okonkwo and his family live, Umuofia, the amount of honor and respect depends on your strength. Since early childhood, Okonkwo’s embarrassment about his lazy, poor and neglectful father, Unoka, has led to his tragic flaw; being terrified of looking weak like his father. As a result, he behaves rashly, bringing a great deal of trouble and sorrow upon himself and his family. Okonkwo’s fear of weakness and failure, which stemmed from his father, leads to the horrid and unmerited treatment he gives to those around him and eventually prompted his downfall.…

All of these emotions are charged by the instinct of life and death. In all that we see in Okonkwo, we realize that, both the life and death instincts are basically enlarged by fear: The fear of failure and weakness (as of his father), as well as the fear that his reputation and wealth would go into the hands of a bootless and worthless son, Nwoye, one whom he sees as a prototype of his loathed father. In fact, this instinctual drive (of fear) becomes more evident through his aggressive energy when, he beats Ojuigo and desecrates the week of peace, shoots at his second wife and narrowly misses committing his first murder. He also draws his machete and cuts down Ikemefuna because he is afraid of being thought weak.…

After this incident Nwoye leaves his father for forever. To Okonkwo violence is more important than his relationship with his son. As we can see instead of solving the problem in peace and keeping a healthy relationship with his son he tends to show the violent side of him. Therefore, as the novel progressed, through characterization we can see how Okonkwo’s character becomes more and more aggressive and as he becomes more violent it starts to hunt him both personally and mentally.…
