Small town girls can sometimes act closed off toward newcomers. In the book Okay For Now, written by Gary D. Schmidt, Lil Spicer acts just the opposite toward Doug. Throughout this book, she continues to show how she is kind, helpful, and polite. You can tell by the way Lil displays her actions that she is a kind person. As Doug gets used to living in a new place, Lil gives him her kindness. “When Lil got called on again, she looked back at me and then turned to Mrs. Verne and said, I think he knows.”(99) This quote shows how when Mrs. Verne wouldn’t call on Doug, Lil raised her hand and volunteered him. That shows kindness because she stood up for Doug. Another example that shows how Lil is kind is when she gives Doug compliments.

On page 222, Lil helps Doug give an answer to the science teacher. “ ‘What historic event in the sciences will occur during this new year of 1969?... Doug Swieteck? Mr. Ferris asked. The moonshot, whispered Lil.” (222) This shows how when Doug didn’t know the answer to the question, Lil was there to help. Another piece of evidence that shows how Lil is helpful is when she helps Doug with his art. “Lil helped by letting me know what I was doing wrong. “ ‘Isn’t there too much blood there?’ She said when I spread my drawing out.”(134) Although it might not seem like she is helping, her intentions are good. Lastly, Lil is very polite. “She’s always so polite”(294) Doug says this when Lil meets Mrs. Windermere for the first time and is very nice to her. Lil uses her polite mannerism to greet people too. “Thank you, said Lil. It’s very nice to meet you”.(293) By saying things like what was said in the quote above, Lil proves that she is very polite and mindful of how she leaves her first impressions. She may not believe it herself, but Lil is very polite and you can tell that Doug thinks so too. In the end, Lil is polite, helpful, and kind.
