In the spring of 1989 Jean Ouellette, the mayor of Oka, announced his intentions of expanding the private golf course to eighteen holes and building multiple condominiums on top of the Mohawks’ cemetery. Although there were multiple protests and disagreements from Mohawks as well as concerns from Minister of Native Affairs and Québec Minister of the Environment, the building of the new facilities continued. After 2 centuries of having their land taken away from them, the Mohawk weren’t going to let their pines be stolen and have their cemetery buried under buildings. The protesting began against the further construction of the area in a more aggressive way by the Mohawk. A large barricade was built on the highway to block any construction being started.…

On an asphalt baseball field in Brooklyn, two teams from local Yeshivah schools meet. At first, it just seems like a baseball game between two Jewish high school teams. But the game quickly turns into a holy war when the caftan and ear lock wearing Hasidic team begins to taunt and bully the less conservative “hell-bound sinners” on the other team. Hate boils as Danny Saunders, the leader of the Hasidic team, purposely hits a pitch right back at the pitcher, crushing his glasses and landing him in the hospital for a week. In Kapusitchka by A.M. Klein, the essence of friendliness is captured by the grandmother. The grandmother is viewed as a static character and pursues an aura of delicacy who “doesn't like bad things”(45). She occupies herself with “knit[ting] socks” during the cold winters, while “see[ing] holy men who come from Europe… [as] [she] wears a perruque”(45). During the cold dark nights, “she would kitzu-kitzu [Kapusitchka] into the shed, and spread out empty coal-sacks for him to lie on”; the grandmother was then becoming good friends with the furry creature(45).…

For many years the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes tried desperately to adjust to sharing the land that was once theirs, with the troops and settlers that had moved in on top of them, killed off their game, and essentially made roadways through what hunting grounds remained. Despite all of the sit downs and treaties, relocating to reservations, and being stripped of their dignity as they were forced to rely on the distribution of government annuities, the end result was bloodshed. The Native Americans were not valued as human beings much less the rightful owners of the land in which US troops viciously killed…

Like all Native American tribes in the continental United States, many aspects of the Mohawk tribe’s culture, social institutions and economy were forever changed after the arrival of Europeans. Dutch, French and British and eventually American interaction and wars would all change the course of Mohawk history. The Mohawk, or Kahniakenhaka as they call themselves, are part of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Five Nation Confederacy. The Iroquoian name Kahniakenhaka means “people of the flint place.” Their native land stretched from south of the Mohawk valley region in present day New York, east to central Vermont, north to the St. Lawrence Seaway and West bordering the Oneida Nation.…

To compensate for his lack of exposure to romantic relationships, Sergey displays extremely dominating and pretentious behaviour in his interactions with Masha. Masha, aware that “Most of my former tastes and habits did not please him,” (Tolstoy, 11) practiced and refined skills just to appease Sergey’s haughty air. Instead of loving Masha for her soul and the person she was, Sergey pushes and pulls at her appearance, talents, and emotions. Masha describes Sergey as having “contempt” for her personal appearance, even laughing when others flatter her. When she plays piano poorly, Sergey chastises her rudely -- Masha, in her childishness, interprets this abuse as constructive criticism between adults.…

This skill can be used in literature and in life to further connect to those in the story or in your surroundings. In the play "Antigone" many people accomplish tasks and speak phrases that we could find strange and unreasonable, a woman sacrifices her future life just so she could keep a promise, a man dies because he found a woman dead? Strange, that is until one does what is older than time and put himself into their shoes and see why they made the decisions they did.…
