Pavel Tchelitchew was born September 21 1898 In Moscow and died July 31 1957. Pavel created an oil painting during the period of surrealism. Surrealism is the movement when artist made art to represent their unconscious thoughts and dreams. Hide and seek was created by Tchelitchew sometime between June 1940-1942 in Vermont during world war 2, again during the period of surrealism. Pavel believed his art to be “a kind of metamorphism as a magic which can transform any visible object into a whole series of objects.” The painting is displayed in the MoMA currently on the 4th floor of the paint and sculpture section, before then the painting was part of the MoMA’s solo exhibition in 1942. With his art Pavel wanted to bring to life the journey …show more content…
I intercept the piece indifferent ways for starters I see the painting being the tree of life because of all the children’s faces that is hidden and displayed throughout the painting and then the tree that has a foot painted into the bottom which isn’t realistic and could be displaying that the tree has or is giving life to the children throughout the painting. The painting has a huge tree in the middle that has veins that pop out of the tree as well as the foot at the bottom of the tree where the roots should be giving off the illusion that the tree has life. So as not to only be growing as a tree but as a human, where that human may be a child and grows bigger into an adult. This theory of mines connects and goes back to the fact that Pavel did research on the growth of not only trees but children as …show more content…
When I look at the painting a few of the children’s faces are seen very clearly and then there are hidden faces and bodies that I did not notice until after looking at the painting for more than a few minutes. Not only was some of these children hidden in my opinion but also Pavel does a really good job at blending in the human like features that he has included in his painting. In order for me to see the veins in the painting I had to notice the other human features of the tree such as the foot as well as the hands that are hidden in the painting and then I realized that Pavel didn’t just add in random lines to be more abstract but that he was actually creating the blue like pattern that could be seen through the skin of a human that comes from the

“Flora and fauna were vitally important to her pre-Columbian ancestors and during her life this precious resource was cultivated by the oppressed indigenous population she championed. She connects herself to the natural world by echoing the hairs on the vegetation and monkey in her own tresses, styled in her signature indigenous fashion. This bond with nature is reinforced by the curves of her monkey’s arm that embrace her neck, the root-like ribbon slung around the monkey (which she used as a symbol for life-lines), the bone-like necklace Frida wears, and the green ribbon woven so skillfully into her hair that she becomes a part of the leaves” ( Ortega,J.,L.2014). All the forms in this painting are smooth and given special observation to details. Fine…

Out of the Darkness and into Individuality By: Brooklynn Chopko In society people tend to react to circumstances in two ways: either fighting the constraints placed upon them or choosing to shy away and hide, never really facing their problem. However, there are rare circumstances where an individual can completely forsake all societal conventions, often enduring harsh ridicule but coming out more gratified than before. In the painting Waited, the artist Clive Smith utilizes the hiding girl to employ the idea that societal constraints are weighing individuals down and one must break free from these conventions in order to escape one’s position.…

They are too small beyond recognition, so viewers can just make out a figure. Some artworks that impressionists in the 19th century created share some commonalities with this painting. Impressionists depicted the nature with phenomenology excluding political, social, historical thought. They just focused on nature itself, so people are usually cropped or are represented by blurry silhouettes. The big difference from impressionism and the distinct feature of this painting is that what the artist wants to deliver is small philosophy, which is harmony between humanity and nature.…

This marks entrance to the European painting galleries. This collection is comprised of European Old Master paintings that date from the thirteenth to nineteenth centuries. This time span covers the years leading up to the Renaissance, the cultural revolution itself, and what happens afterwards. The painting “Triumph of Marius” being at the very top of the staircase might be symbolic of how this collection is the “Triumph” or pinnacle of great art. The collection is at the top of the staircase for the same symbolic reason, it is more refined, or “above” the other art downstairs.…

Virtually no one likes to think of their cradle, their safe haven, to be rocking above an abyss. That's where the monsters are, ready to snatch you up and swallow you into eternal darkness. That darkness, however, is the difference between living and not living, and the cradle, as Vladimir Nabokov depicts it, "is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness" (303). In his essay "Perfect Past", Nabokov crafts a beautifully poetic account of what it means to exist as a human in our most transitory state: life, which is positioned between the boundless periods of pre-birth and post-death. With an artfully clear use of language, anecdotes, and symbolism, Nabokov asserts that existence in its purest essence is a shared and somewhat…

Everything from the outlines to the composition itself is drastically altered to create a more aesthetically pleasing painting. His use of bold colors, thick outlines, and “benday dots used in commercial printing imitate the character of cartoons,” (Stokstad 1095). The overall thickness of the lines makes the picture seem very flat and cartoon like, but the variance of the line weight does add some dimension. The use of these thick black outlines tells the viewer that this is not supposed to be realistic even though the painting is life size. Every single line is at a diagonal, which creates a sense of movement and direction.…

Both infants are nude, but Saint John adorns a brown cloth wrapped around his pudgy body. All figures in the painting have faint golden halos around their heads, signifying their holiness. While these figures take up space in the foreground in a pyramidal composition, greenery surrounds them in the background. The figures are enveloped in a state of utter nature-plants spurting off the ground, the fluffy trees employed in the distance, the grassy hills, so much so that the small town pictured in the background seems to have green hues. The sky in the background takes on a muted blue-grayish tonality with faded white clouds.…
