One example includes the Cuban missile crisis; a time in which the Soviet union were testing out nuclear tipped missiles. Everyone in the country was fearing for their lives, and nobody could focus properly on their priorities. During his speech he talks about how literature humanity is capable of has ceased to exist because of the events that have transpired. People had a negative mindset on everything and were failing to realize how good life can be if it is lived to the fullest. Steinbeck wanted people to open up their minds and express themselves through literature. Throughout Of Mice And Men there is one character, Lennie Small, who seems to be the source of all the confusion that goes on throughout the book. Lennie is a mentally retarded man with a body structure comparable to that of a bear. These two traits do not prove to work well with each other on several occasions because Lennie uses his strength to harm people. One example of this is when Lennie is in the barn with Curley's wife.
