Ohana The first day entering this world, we see what we consider to be “family.” A mom, a dad, and one or two siblings. They are the people we know. We go to them for comfort. We go to them in triumph. We go to them whenever. They are family. Family is there in times of need, sorrow, happiness... so what’s to say someone who provides those needs isn’t family. Who says that a tattered old piece of paper, decides who we call family. Is this really what family is? As a child a popular television series was on constant repeat. Lilo and Stitch taught kids all around the true meaning of family. “Ohana means family, and family means noone gets left behind.” Stitch was a “dog” that eventually turned into Lilo’s best friend, partner in crime, and family. You don’t necessarily like all the chocolate in the box but you enjoy them anyway because it is chocolate. Not all people that are considered family have to be the greatest person. There will be arguments, there will be days where there is no communication, and there will be drama. Being that they are family there will also be ways to get through these rough times we go through with one another. Being a big part of someone’s life involves being able to work things out and having the respect for each other to go through the process. Figuring out how to solve even the smallest arguments is what makes a family. Don’t just go around calling people family, calling someone family means they have to be important in some way to be consider family (Blessing). For instance, as a child I was given a godfather. Growing up I didn’t consider him family because he wasn’t a major part of my life. There was just the title, godfather. Recently he has made sure to be apart of my life.
