They were so good at it that they would get to guide other explorers like John Freedmont. Kit guided John through the great basin, Oregon, and California. If it wasn’t for Kit the United States wouldn’t be the size it is today. John even described Kit as having supernatural powers. Most would think of a mountain man as being nasty and illiterate, but kit was intelligent. He could speak many different languages such as French and Spanish. He could speak a lot of American Indian languages as well. The people didn’t believe that these Mountain Men could know the wildness and how to live in it like the back of their hand. I still find it hard to believe myself, but then I can see some of my family that has grown up in Kentucky how they live. They hunt their only food, burn the wood they cut to keep warm and are always exploring. They’ve learned how to live this way because they lived in Kentucky.
