“Put your hands up”the officer calls. I follow his command. Now put your gun down. I follow his command. As the officers surround me, I panic, and take out my other gun, and shoot an officer, right in the head. I feel a sharp pain in my leg. I look down, to see the hole in my leg. I pass out. “I want a lawyer,” I say. I have the best lawyer in the country, because I am a billionaire. I just messed up. My lawyer arrives, and asks me what happened, from the beginning. I explained what happened. “I just, I just, I just took something,” I say as tears stream down my face. “I wasn't thinking. I just thought it would be fun…” I am interrupted. “What would be fun,” my lawyer says as he cross examines

My lawyer figures out what happens, and begins to construct his argument, for the trial next week. I am transported to a jail, and kept special watch on. As I enter I am bombarded by the large amount of insults being thrown at me. Most of which, revolve around my incredibly high income. None of the other inmates make a fraction of what I do. I sit in solitude, without my custom made newest iPhone, but it was impossible. I was also incredibly hungry by the time lunch rolled around. As I stood in line to get my food, I looked at the food, in disgust. “I refuse to eat this meatpaste,” I say, as it is my turn to get my food. I do not eat my lunch. As dinner rolls around, my hunger influences me, and I loose control, much like that dreaded night, where my whole world changed. This time I demonstrate some self control, and don't say anything. I destroy my since of pride, I once had by giving in to the hunger, and eat the disgusting jail food. Today is my trial, I know my lawyer will get me out of this like so much in the past. As the trial goes on, I lose focus, like I was back in school. I all hear is nonsense. All I can hear is “Death

On 07/14/17, at 3:30pm I Deputy Warden N. Christian was dispatched to 320 Whitehorne Ave on an injury-possible dangerous or vicious dog. I and The Columbus Division Police (CPD) Officer Shannon #2344 arrived at the above location. I met victim Brandon Stoops, Mr. Stoops stated he was walking west in an alley just south of the above location, when he saw a microwave positioned close to 320 Whitehorne Ave side fence. Mr. Stoops went to go pick up the microwave when a small dark colored dog came out from underneath the fence and chased him.…

As criminology majors, we must learn the inner workings of the court system as well as the crucial courtroom players. We have all watched series such as Law and Order, CSI, American Crime, etc., but they give us a false sense of what an actual courtroom setup looks like. Unlike these shows, there are various steps that must be taken before the defendant is prosecuted. There is the arrest, initial appearance, bail is set, either a grand jury or preliminary hearing is conducted, arraignment occurs, along with all pre-trial motions being heard before trial, a trial is then started, a sentence is given, and sometimes the defendant appeals the charge. In contrast, assembly line justice cases end at the arraignment phase since the defendant accepts a plea deal.…

It’s a daunting place the courtroom, to think this is the same place that criminals get prosecuted, charged for committing murder, domestic violence, there all prosecuted here, so what does that make me? Am I nothing but a murderer or rapist. I walk into the courtroom, it’s airy, a layer of silence blankets the room, I walk pass Jase's mother, she stares me down, guilt rushes over my body. I know all too well what she thinks of me, and what Jase's situation would be like if I were just to come forward as that third man. I look over to the Lamb, he gives me a reassuring nod, he’s ready to take a bullet for me, go down with a prosecution that could set him back years, and leave a big black mark on his file, the jobs that he could miss out on his future in pieces.…

The familiar aroma filled the courtroom, a typically soothing blend of the fresh-cut grass directly outside, the familiar scent of freshly printed ink on crisp paper, and the relaxing perfume of the coffee we all depend on for survival. Since that day, however, that scent has lost its appeal. Just thinking about the trial makes me sick to my stomach. The prosecutor, Sharpe, renowned for his quick wit and skill. The opposition, Finch, was just as known for his sharp tongue and wide intellect.…

First and foremost, the whole experience is one that I could never forget. I realized that a criminal trail and a pretrial deferred greatly from all the arraignments that I have ever been to. An arraignment in the United States is the formal reading or presentation of charges against an individual as well as the stage where an individual enters a plea of guilty or not guilty. While a pretrial as stated earlier, is a proceeding that includes the judge, prosecutors and the defense attorney who are to access the facts or evidence of a case and decide whether or not they are going to be admissible during the real trial. While the arraignment and pretrial can be considered as the base of the whole trail process, the criminal trial itself is the foundation or house.…

The justice system has some stereotypes of being inefficient and ineffective, but there is a lot more to the story that shows the complexity and intricacies of the justice system. During the past two or three weeks, I have participated in a mock trial case as both as a witness and as a juror. From these experiences, I have learned a lot about the justice system. My new found knowledge and respect for the justice system can be broken down into two categories: the structure/professionalism and the framing of this case or any case. The atmosphere of structure and professionalism was seen with the lengthy process of the procedure of the current laws and the procedure of direct and cross examination on the witness in question.…

The Houston runway was quickly disappearing beneath me, the plane ascending, leaving my stomach dismantled on the tarmac. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I was truly on a plane, by myself, headed to Buenos Aires, Argentina. My mother laughed at the thought of me living abroad; consistently making it known my ideas were childish, financially unstable and unattainable. With a slight grin pulling at my lips, I close my eyes and begin to wonder what the world will look like on the other side of that airplane door.…

Personal biography I was born and raised in a high crime area in The Bronx. Once I saw a man from my window robbing the apartment across from me. I was scared and did not feel safe. if there is one thing college has taught me, it is that it does not matter what you think you are going to become, or how far back you start from, but it is that determination in the place of those disadvantages is what makes all the difference. I did not choose to be a lawyer because anyone in my family was, in fact, no one in my family worked anything close to it. My mother has worked as a waitress, a seamstress in a factory, and finally as a baker since arriving in this country. I took it upon myself to try and become something more, something that my mother did not have the opportunity to be. As the oldest child in a house of three I fulfilled the function of the interpreter in the family, which gave me the sense of responsibility and maturity that came with that role.…

Law Enforcement Interview Police officers are seen under the radar in everyday life. By under the radar I mean, we notice them driving around town, or when we are slamming on our brakes passing them going twenty miles over the speed limit on the interstate, or when we all pretend to be perfect drivers when we notice them trailing us from our rear view mirrors. What we don’t notice is who the police officer that’s giving us a ticket is, or what their ranking is or how well trained or educated they are. Police officers are easily disliked by the public because of their jobs of handing out tickets, or making necessary arrests but all they’re trying to do is keep the community safe.…
