An issue I've rarely seen spoken about is the racial problem of minorities towards other minorities. Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, a city right besides Mexico, I hardly interacted with other cultures and races. I never faced any sort of racial discrimination, but I was definitely a witness to it. This experience has brought me to believe that offensive stereotypes perpetuated by the media causes minorities to view each other negatively and discriminatorily. While passing by one day, I saw the black female underclassmen sobbing to my teacher. I waited until the younger student left before asking my teacher what had happened. As it turned out, other classmates had resorted to using racist names and offensive stereotypes to mock her. I didn't know what happened to her after that, but I could still remember the despair written on her face. Later that day, I went to speak to the black student in my grade, his name being Josh. We conversed often during lunch on political topics. When I brought up the subject of …show more content…
My family in America all have negative outlooks on African Americans and other minorities. They whole heartedly believe the stereotypes associated with black individuals, even if none of them have had significant encounters with black people. When I question them about this, their responses are, "Didn't you see the news? I heard or saw they were like that. They are nothing like us." In actuality, Hispanics and African Americans both suffer from poor education, low-income, high chances of drug related crimes or violence, high-rates of teen pregnancy, and job discrimination. Except the media doesn't show our similarities, but our

John Hope Franklin tells a story of something that happened when he was only seven years old in the story of “The Train from Hate”. It involves Franklin’s father which had moved to Tulsa to be able to support his family, while John, his mother, and his sister had still lived in Rentiesville Oklahoma. After researching more into the story I found that Charles Haskins, had done a lecture on Franklin, explaining Franklin’s father did not feel safe with his family being around the racial riots happening in Tulsa at the time. I agree that fearing minorities is a common theme in the modern world. I believe that the media consistently depicts people of color as criminals, while people who are not of color tend to be depicted as the child who got caught up in the wrong crowd. I think that the way the media shows us people really influences people on how they will think of people, even when the stereotype is not…

It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

When we sit down after a long day and turn on the T.V., we immerse ourselves in the lives of other people. Most often, these characters withhold attributes that we, the viewer, admire and strive towards. In many ways, what we see on the screens and in papers changes our views on the types of people and the topics we see. Children grow up believing what they have been taught from the media they are introduced to, whether that be stereotypes or the portrayal of different cultures. Mainstream media's negative portrayal of different minority groups, specifically people of African American and Latino descent, creates false negative stereotypes that permeate society’s perception of these groups.…

Over the year’s social media has played a major role in the stereotypical views of social groups. Stereotypes are characteristics imposed upon groups of people because of their race, nationality and sexual identity, among others. Whether it be knowingly or unknowingly, these negative viewpoints are spread throughout our world on an everyday basis. It can be as simple as a tweet saying “All Indians are terrorist and seeking attack on the United states” which stereotypes their race and could change other’s viewpoints on them. The reposting of that tweet can go on and on, onto other networks as well dehumanizing Indians as people and as a race.…
