Romantic breakups are notorious for how swiftly they can rend the hearts of those involved, but in Ben West's offbeat short film OTHERHALF, the separation isn't just limited to the heart- it's a full body affair.
OTHERHALF wastes nearly no time at all getting to the core premise of the film, which is enticingly zany the instant it is revealed. Beginning in a finely-furnished marital and family affairs office, our nameless main character and his off-screen significant other are being walked through a session of couples counseling. The main character starts to relay to the counselor how the two have seemed to drift apart recently, then there's a sharp cut to a shot showing the two in their entirety (or lack of, really). Our main character is merely the upper half of a body, bespectacled and dressed in an "I'd Rather Be Playing Air Hockey" t-shirt, while his significant other is a denim-wearing lower half. You might also be scratching your head in the process- wondering how exactly this film is making you laugh and also feel for its characters so hard, but that's got to be a sign the film is doing something good, right?
