“You cannot achieve environmental security and human development without addressing the basic issues of health and nutrition” - Gro Harlem Brundtland. Lately school lunches have been going downhill. Improvements in our school lunches are desperately needed to make changes in how the youth eat.
Larger varieties of fruits and vegetables can help better school lunches because the more available the more likely students are to eat them. “Studies show that introduction of schools salad bars increases the amount and variety of fruits and vegetables consumed by children in schools” (Harris 295). Schools that provide salad bars have a larger selection of healthy food choices which would increase the intake of fruits and vegetables.“Increasing fruit and vegetable intake is important for good health and may decrease risk for many chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers” (Harris 294). With off campus lunch students can spend their money on what they actually want. “School lunches don’t have the best reputation, especially in the United States. The food is pre planned and often not exactly…good” (Lombardo 1). Most students what to spend money on something they have a taste for instead of the non processed food that are given at schools. Which may not satisfy their taste buds. Off campus lunches even help bring money into the economy. “Off campus lunch can be viewed as a valuable revenue stream for local businesses. One ‘highly profitable’ fast food location up for sale advertised in 2007 as a factor in its value that it is located next to ‘a high school which allows off campus lunch time to their students.’ These businesses may in turn make donations or otherwise support the school” (Marlo R. 4).
