Walking along the shore of a sandy beach, whether feet be bare or booted, each step will leave an imprint within the sand. Varying from deep to shallow from indistinct to detailed, each step will change the sand no matter the foot. But as the waves should have it, each footprint will be washed away and erased, leaving the beach still a beach but the grains of sand sorted new. Author, Laura Hillenbrand, wrote the novel, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, to establish that should one choose to look with sanguinity any situation is not impossible to overcome, even if one is changed in the end.

What one man received, as did the other. Sacrifice was one of the the many themes in, Unbroken, that truly inflicted other men. Every man was starving and thirsty but if given a “gift” most men did not selfishly hoard it for themselves but shared with as many as they could. In the raft, they were not three minds trying to survive alone but together as one. Eventually Mac’s pessimistic thoughts left as the other two men connected and influenced him into a state of life one could manageably accept. Although never truly recovered, Mac’s state of mind became essential to the survival of the other two men. Relying on instinct as he fought sharks, saving the life of Louis as he fished for food. Mac did not make it to the end of their journey but instead died with dignity, “Had Mac not survived the crash, Louie and Phil might well have been dead by that thirty-third day. In his dying days, Mac had redeemed himself (172).” As optimism should have it, Mac’s small accomplishments of trying to survive saved his friends, allowing to see the ones they love in the
