Of Odysseus In 'In The One-Eyed Giant's Cave'

Odysseus is the main character in the story "In the One-Eyed Giant's Cave" by Homer. He’s considered a hero in this great epic tale. He can be described as fierce, clever, and brave. He uses all these traits to an advantage when he single handedly takes down a huge cyclops. Whether its luck or skill, the hero escapes the monster and blinds him as well. The first trait I described him as is fierce. I think he’s fierce because Odysseus known as a conqueror of cities. He conquers Ismarus, Ciconces easily. In the story it states, “ The wind drove me out of Ilium on to Ismarus, Ciconces' stronghold. There I sacked the city, killed the men, but as for the wives and plunder, that rich haul we dragged away from the place we shared it around so no …show more content…
He’s clever because he tricks the cyclops by giving himself a false name to fool the cyclops neighbor. The story says, “'So, you ask me the name I'm known by, Cyclops? I will tell you. But you must give me a guest-gift as you've promised. Nobody, that's my name. Nobody, so my mother and father call me, all my friends.” Odysseus is also clever because he gets the giant drunk to distract him while he’s scheming.
The story states, “ So he declared. I poured him another fiery bowl, three bowls I brimmed and three he drank to the last drop,” For these reasons he’s clever. Finally, the last characteristic I used to describe Odysseus is brave. I think brave really describes Odysseus because he’s a leader, and leaders shouldn’t fall under pressure. Odysseus did just that. He escaped the Giant with his life and the lives of a few crew members. The Story says, “From there we sailed on, glad to escape our death, yet sick at heart for the dear companions we had lost”. That part of the story was from when they escaped but grieved. For this, he is brave. Odysseus is a great hero, and leader. His characteristics and actions are what make him who he is. He is famous in these kind of stories and will be for as long as stories are told. Hero’s are everywhere in real life and in stories. After all, not all hero’s wear

Odysseus shows his bravery in many of his actions and also through his dialogue. In “The Land of the Dead,” Odysseus travels to the underworld, so he can receive advice for the prophet, Tiresias. In particular, the text says “Then I addressed the blurred and breathless dead, vowing to slaughter my best heifer for them” (11.584-85). This quote refers to when Odysseus was sacrificing a black lamb and an ewe, so he could speak to the dead spirits. This piece of evidence shows that Odysseus is brave because he journeys to the underworld and talks to a dead man, just so he can get information about his future travel home.…

During his journey, he takes on challenges that most would either fail or turn away from showing his courage to move forward. Throughout the epic, Odysseus comes up against many impossible situations that he makes possible because of this courage: "gasping as Scylla swung them upon her cliff and there at her cavern's mouth, she bolted them down raw-screaming out, flinging their arms toward me...of all the pitiful things I've had to witness, suffering, search out the pathways of the sea, this wrenched my heart the most" (279.276-282). This situation not only shows his will to persevere through this horrid encounter with a monster, but also how he uses the strength gained from his past encounters. For example, he classifies these situations as 'pitiful' and 'suffering' showing the journeys he ventured from were not pleasing, but he pushed through them looking for his end goal (reach Ithaca his home). Not only does this show how courage was essential in Odysseus' world but also how it plays a role now.…
