For generations books have been disputed over, criticized, and even banned. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a literary classic often frowned upon by critics and taken to offense by many people. The book tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two migrant ranch workers, moving from place to place. Lennie, is mentally ill, while George helps take care of him through their travels. Of Mice and Men should be banned due to the books use of violence, vulgar language, and racism. The integration of violence in literature should banned in school curriculum. This is not only inappropriate but encourages bad behavior and the use of profanity. The combination of vulgar language and aggression in Of Mice and Men is unsuitable for the age group being taught. It encourages adolescents at such a fragile age to not only use this type of language but could give the wrong message that it is acceptable to use profanity in school and at home. Students should be learning the opposite at such a young age, morals and to not curse. The book uses a combination of vulgar words and aggression, "I wasn't kicked in the head with no horse, was I, George?" "Be a damn good thing if you was," George said viciously. "Save ever'body a hell of a lot of trouble" (Steinbeck 61-62). Violence and profanity used together encourages the wrong behavior in children. Being taught in the classroom just heightens the wrong impression that cursing is justified, because it is in literature. The incorporation of curse words could also misguide students, and distract them from the real purpose or lesson.
