Thomas Aquinas said: “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship”. Aquinas suggests that relationships are the most important thing in life. To be in a good relationship means that you have achieved the best part of life. John Steinbeck reinforces this idea. In the novella “Of Mice and Men”, Steinbeck reveals that everyone needs to be involved in some kind of relationship to be able to live properly.
A lonely man is usually depressed and will eventually go crazy if no one is there to help them. Crooks is someone who went through loneliness and understands how being lonely affects people. Crooks stated that “a guy needs someone to be near him … a guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody” (Steinbeck 72). Since Crooks was the only black on the ranch, he usually didn’t have anyone to talk to, so he became lonely and experienced all the effects of what loneliness does to someone. He invited Candy and Lennie into his room to quench his need for someone to be around him. Lennie is another character that experienced the effects of loneliness. Near the end of the story, “from out of Lennie’s head there came a little fat old woman” (Steinbeck 100) which was his dead Aunt Clara. Whenever

George said that if Lennie gets “in trouble like [he’s] always done before, [George wants him] to come right [to the place they started] an’ hide in the brush” (Steinbeck 15). Since George knew how prone Lennie was to get into trouble, George gives Lennie guidance on what he should do if he gets in an issue. Whenever Lennie was with George, he never did anything incriminating that would get him in trouble, only when George wasn’t there. George had a hard time killing Lennie, his best friend, since Lennie was very important to him.
