Movie Review Of Mice and Men opens with intense music following men chasing a woman in a torn red dress. The men, with dogs, guns, and horses, are looking for someone and that causes questions in the opening scene to erupt. Then John Malkovich is shown and Gary Sinise running as well but into water and hiding under the plants in the water. In the novel, the hook is very different. The novel opens with a scenic view of the pool and forest around it with Malkovich and Sinise sitting around it. They are calmly talking and drinking this water from the pool and this calm scene is the opposite of the movie intro. Lennie, played by George Malkovich, is portrayed as a very childish man. This is represented by the way Malkovich talks and acts. In the first few minutes he gets to the pool, he drinks the water and spits it out very playfully at Gary Sinise. This action would be seen done by someone much younger than him and that is one way how his childlike behavior is portrayed in the movie. Another way it is portrayed is by the way he talks. One example of this is when Crooks tries to explain to Lennie what really goes on but it goes right over his head. Lennie has never seen discrimination because he is not smart enough to understand what is going on. Crooks tries to tell him that when everyone goes into town, he has to stay back and read because no one wants him there. He also explains that he just has to sit in his room all day and do nothing because all of the other men are very mean to him and won’t let him take part in anything they are doing. Another example of loneliness is with Curley’s wife. When she explains herself to men, every time she says that she is very lonely and just needs someone to talk to.
