I do believe that George made the right decision and sometimes the right choice isn't the most pleasant choice. After Carlson shoots candy's dog in the back of the head Candy regretfully states that it should have been him to shoot the dog. George knows this and sees that it is only right for him to kill his best friend and not an enraged blood-hungry man like Curley. The most chilling part was that George killed Lennie just like Carlson killed candy's dog, a bullet through the back of the head. Although Lennie's execution was more prolonged because George loved Lennie no matter how many bad things he did. George and Lennie may not have had much in life but one thing they did have was each other. George stuck with Lennie no matter what he did because they were each other's families. Even though they weren't related George watched over Lennie to make sure he was safe. When Lennie threatened to run off into the woods George apologized and told him he wanted him to stay.
