Although George is a smart guy, he is lonely. He relies on his relationship with Lennie to feel better about his loneliness. George has known Lennie for a long time and feels responsible for him. This makes George feel lonely in that it alienates him from other people. George pictures the ranch and the girl he is supposed to meet and sometimes Lennie just doesn't fit into that picture. Lennie doesn't have the ability to live on his own and society would not be very appreciative of his differences and would be scared of him and stay away from him.
