“The most terrible feeling is loneliness and the feeling of being unloved”-Mother Teresa. The book Of Mice and Men was set in the 1930s. Which was during the time of the Great Depression. This quotation exhibits how most of the people then didn’t have anything. For instance George and Lennie are the only ones that aren’t alone, because they have each other. Almost all of the other characters in the story portray loneliness. Steinbeck greatly emphasizes loneliness through Curley’s Wife, Crooks, and Candy.
The first character that portrays loneliness is Curley’s Wife. There are many moments in the story where she comes to the bunkhouse and would ask “have any of you guys seen Curley” (31). Crooks is the African American stable buck. He is lonely because no one ever wants to talk to him because he is African American. It is shown in this quotation “Guys don’t come into a colored man’s room very often” (75). This was said when Lennie walked into Crooks’s room. Crooks was surprised and kind of excited when Lennie came in, because no one ever comes into his room just to have a conversation with him. Another quotation that shows no one ever comes in just to talk to him is “maybe Slim, Slim has come in twice or three times” (74). That shows that no one ever comes and talks to him. Slim is the only one that ever comes in and it's probably just to tell him about work or a job he has for him. So when Lennie comes in and sits down to talk to him he tries to hide how excited he is by acting like he doesn’t want Lennie in his room. By the end of that scene in the book you can tell that all he wanted to sit down and talk to someone that would
