Of Mice And Men George And Lennie's Relationship

The novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck is about two disparate migrant workers, George and Lennie, who travel around California looking for work during the Great Depression. Lennie and George find themselves on a farm in California where they plan to work until they have enough money to buy the little plot of land that they want. They almost had enough money to buy it when things went very wrong. Lennie killed Curley’s wife, and George knew that they could not run away again. In order to fully understanding the nature of George and Lennie’s relationship they should be compared and contrasted. George- a very hard worker- is exceptionally capable of makings decisions and determining when something is right or wrong. George, being hard worker, is willing to work for what he wants to achieve. Lennie, like George, is a hard worker, but in a different way. He is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goal of having land and tending the rabbits, but Lennie is more of a brute worker who just follows orders. Lennie is totally incompetent when it comes to making decisions or having any responsibility at all. He can never remember anything George tells him, and he panics when he is forced to make a decision for himself. Lennie has some problems when it comes to self-control and determining what is right and what is wrong. Lennie loves animals, but when he pets them he gets too excited and ends up killing them. When he was alone in the barn with Curley’s wife he ended up killing her, because he could not control himself and make a rational decision. When this happened Lennie knew he “did a bad thing”, but he did not know how bad it was so he tried to run
