First of all Lennie has many flaws that drive the story. Lennie is mentally slow but physically strong this proves to be his biggest downfall in the novel. He gets himself into trouble quite frequently throughout the novel. Lennie got himself and his best friend George kicked off a ranch because of his slow and physical nature. The character George who takes care of Lennie points out these flaws to a ranch owner named Slim ""I used to play jokes on him. I had fun with 'im. Used to play jokes on him because he was too dumb to take care of himself." This showed that George knew that Lennie was slower than normal, but he took care of him because Lennie couldn't take care of himself. Even though Lennie is looked after he still finds himself getting into problems because of his flaws. When George and Lennie arrive on a new ranch things were fine and things were looking up for them. George and Lennie had a plan to buy a farm for themselves to keep Lennie out of trouble. That dream goes down the drain when he accidentally killed the wife of the ranch owners son. George had very little self confidence and self doubt. In the novel George reveals this about himself when he says "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place....With us it ain't like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us." This shows that George doesn't think very highly of himself or that he will succeed or that people don't care about him. When George gets paid for working on the ranch he blows all of his money on booze and at the brothel because he has no self worth or purpose so he thinks. The fact that he does this proves that he isn't trying to make himself better, but he is on a self destructive path because of his feelings and flaws. This plays apart in the story more towards the ending when he kills Lennie. After that he truly has no one left, but himself so he is totally alone in the world.
