The American Dream is a Fallacy Most of America’s wealth is controlled by a small handful of people, therefore explains the sad reality of the American Dream. The book “Of Mice and Men” written by John Steinbeck, reveals that reaching one’s dream comes with countless sacrifices. It is a fantasy that only money can buy. From my perception, The American Dream is all about having opportunities, freedom, equality, and a steady job with fair income. Steinbeck adds convincing facts about the reality of the American dream in Of Mice and Men, which effectively engages the reader’s emotional appeals when George kills off his good friend Lennie at the end. According to the Myth of the American Dream article, “With the cost of living becoming so high and lack of medical care or job security, minimal pay and an expensive education system are just some the hurdles that people have to jump over to reach the American Dream.” Really, people who have the money have the ability to reach this dream. When so many people are traveling places to places to find a job, there are rich people who buy luxurious things that aren’t even important, instead of helping people who are in need. With their low income, it would be hard for their family since there are so many expenses like food, and monthly house payments. Their children might not be able to come to school because of expensive tuition fees. That’s why some parents work full time jobs, and some even have two jobs just so they can provide for their families.
