Numerous groups of people are still discriminated against by society today. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Curley’s wife is discriminated against because she is a women and men see her as a worthless person. Crooks is treated unfairly because of his race, and the ranchers believe they are superior because they are white. Candy is discriminated against because he is old and society therefore views him as being a waste of space. These various types of characters suffer from discrimination because of the way they were born and have evolved. Curley’s Wife is discriminated against because she is a woman and the men see her as being worthless. When Curley’s wife was strolling around the barn among the men, Candy starts telling her, “You gotta husban’. You got no call foolin’ aroun’ with other guys, causin’ trouble” (77). He goes on to

“Candy looked a long time at Slim to try to find some reversal. And Slim gave him none. At last Candy said softly and hopelessly, "Awright—take 'im." He did not look down at the dog at all. He lay back on his bunk and crossed his arms behind his head and stared at the ceiling.” (49) In this scene the ranchers walk all over Candy and end up killing his dog because they think it is too old to be of an value. This is also how the men think of Candy. They don’t give him an option and therefore Candy is forced to let them kill this dog, who is probably his closest companion. “You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn’t no good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here I wisht somebody’d shoot me. But they won’t do nothing like that.
