Of Mice and Men, a novella written by, John Steinbeck, is about two traveling migrant workers, George and Lennie, during the Great Depression. George and Lennie travel to a ranch in the Salinas Valley, to work and make money to pursue their dreams. Lennie being mentally handicap, caused George to be his caretaker. Lennie, being mentally handicap, was not good at remembering things, which caused trouble. George informs Lennie to stay away from the boss’s son, Curley, wife but Curley’s wife can not seem to stay away from the workers, which later affected Curley’s wife, Lennie, and George. The decisions Curley’s wife, Lennie, and George make has an effect on their lives and dreams.

Lennie’s caretaker, George, often gets him out of all the conflicts he is in. While with George by the stream, the two have a dream. A dream to own their own farm with a couple of acres, so the two can be independent and work for themselves. George tells Lennie, “When we get the couple of acres I can let you tend the rabbits all right” (15). This is important to Lennie, because he likes to pet soft things, and he will be able to care for the rabbits. After all, Lennie being mentally handicap, he was not capable of realizing his strength which had an effect on their dream. One afternoon, Curley’s wife approaches Lennie while in the barn, and tries to communicate with him. Curley’s wife gets comfortable with Lennie , unaware of him being mentally handicap, and allows him to pet her hair. Once she told him to stop, he held on to her hair even tighter. Lennie was not aware of the proper reaction. Lennie told Curley’s wife, “Don’t you go yellin’, he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish.
