They were speaking about it right before Curley walked into the house in a fight with Slim. Yelling and harsh remarks were being exchanged when Curley looked at Lennie and asserted, “What the hell you laughin’ at?” (62). He noticed Lennie smiling in the direction of their altercation. Lennie did not realize he was doing this, as he was still daydreaming about living a more exciting life on a farm. The shouting in his direction confuses him, and before he knows it he is thrown into a fight. If Lennie would have comprehended the fighting going on around him, like George did, he would have escaped this situation which he did not know how to act in. Not being able to think for himself, he looks to George who tells him to fight Curley, so he grabs his hand and crushes it. Immediately confused because everyone is now yelling for him to let go of him, Lennie freezes. He ended up severely hurting Curley and causing bitter feelings toward himself from some of the men. In that situation, Lennie was unable to think for himself and determine the right thing to do. A combination of his strength and misunderstanding of the tense atmosphere around him could have resulted in George and Lennie being “canned” (64) or even ganged up on by Curley’s friends, which would have created more strain in their relationship.
