The story takes place on the loneliest of lonely ranches in Soledad, California during the depressing years of 1930’s. The two main characters in the novella are, George Milton, a babysitter and hardworking man, and Lennie Small a simple minded person who has a scandalous yet, innocent past with women. The two men at the beginning, start working on a dreary ranch full of bitter failures like Curley 's Wife, Crooks, and Candy. Throughout the story the rugged society of the 1930’s is expressed through controversial situations. However despite this they fit right in and start their lives anew. A unique thing about the two hardworking men comes from their “American Dream” to live on their own ranch, but “The best plans of Mice and of Men often go awry” (Ode to a Mouse).
