After reading your response I can better understand why this passage holds so much importance to the novel. When reading this passage, you can assume that the symbolism of the fish flies foreshadows the suicides of the Lisbon girl’s like you said. While everyone else in the neighborhood cleans up the massive amount of fish fly corpses from their homes the Lisbon’s house remains untouched, you could almost say that it’s as if they were accepting the death to come. As Eugenides’ states in the novel and you brought up in your response the girl’s fade from existence, which I think is important to notice throughout the novel.
