Act of Euthanasia for Lennie’s Death There has been over 16,110 euthanasia incidents in the United States this past year. Acts of euthanasia are very common ways for a person to meet their death. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie was mentally slower than other men. Lennie would often cause trouble while his closest companion, George, looked after him. Hence, when Lennie was shot to death by George, it was out of an act of euthanasia due to Lennie’s suffering shown through their relationship. To start off, the term euthanasia is defined as “bringing on a gentle and easy death for those suffering”, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. Brittany Maynard was terminally ill, diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. According to Maynard (2014), she made the decision to end her own life through assisted suicide after being told she only had 6 more months to live. Without euthanasia, Brittany Maynard would have had to go through a painful and long stage of death caused by her brain tumor. She has stated in the video explaining her story, “I can’t even tell you the amount of relief that it provides me, to know that I don’t have to die the way that it’s been described to me my brain tumor would take me” (The Brittany Fund). Her case is similar to Lennie’s in the novella. George was aware of the situation and what might’ve been the outcome if he hadn’t shot Lennie himself. As his closest friend, George did not wish upon Lennie, the agonizing treatment he may have received from Curley and Carlson. As you can see, there are real life cases that display comparable situations of what occurred to Lennie. As evidenced, Lennie’s suffering in Of Mice and Men was put to ease by George’s act of euthanasia against him. Lennie was executed while being comforted by his closest friend. The friendship they had made it clear that George had no other alternative in the situation. He acted in this way to save his friend from the misery and torture Lennie may have been put through.
