The next day, George woke up after coming home from the saloon, late the previous night. The day had already begun, with people hard at work. Candy came into the bunkhouse to see if George was awake yet. “George”, Candy said, “jus’ got your mail.”
“Oh, okay”
“There's a letter in there from the people”
“What people?”
“The people that own that ranch, we are still doin’ the ranch, right?”
“Yeah, sure, we can do it.” George went to go tell crooks the plan about the ranch.
The next day, they told everybody that they were going on to make their dreams come true. They left the ranch. On their way to their new ranch, they got onto a bus and went about twenty miles north of Soledad into Old Hilltown.

“How about Lennie?”
“I’m good with that.”, said Candy. The men all agreed that the dog’s name should be Lennie in honor of him.The men went outside to start their work on the new ranch. They started with caring for the animals. They cleaned the stables and put the newly cleandy horses inside. The two horses looked like they could be shown in a horse show because they were cleaned up so nice. They found some old paint and old wood, in the corner, so they could fix up the outside of the barn.
As the night grew longer the men were getting ready to eat, after they had finished the barn. They were eating beans around the table when Lennie was trying to get the food. Crooks had never had the fresh food before. He had always gotten the leftovers after they had been eaten from the men. The men were ready to go to sleep on their new ranch.
Suddenly George woke up. He started to make breakfast for the men. They were still sleeping at this time. Later, at about eight o’clock, Crooks woke up and came out to the kitchen. He started eating at the table with George. About an hour later George went to go see if Candy was awake. George walked in the room and candy was still sleeping. George walked over to him and he was not breathing. Candy was dead. George called Crooks over and he comes into the room to see Candy dead on the
