In the novel, I Can't Make This Up written by Kevin Hart, and the short story A Modest Proposal written by Jonathan Swift, humor is used to highlight the faults in society. Whether it is stealing, racial tension, poverty, height, or an abusive relationship. Kevin uses a morbid style of humor to release the tension of his audiences, and also the reader. In A Modest Proposal, humor is used by the author to offer an absolutely ridiculous recommendation to deal with poverty. The title is ridiculous, and there's humor in it because the suggestions were that poorer children are asked to be eaten, this is anything but ‘modest’. The short story along with the book does use literary devices to communicate the social issue. The Short story indicates a metaphor which is a form of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action, but it is not literally applicable. Although both the book and the short story use humor, Kevin uses his real-life experiences to make others laugh while ‘A Modest Proposal’ uses humor to propose a solution to poverty in a shocking way but writes it in such a calm factual manner it is funny. It was very interesting learning about how comedy was emphasized throughout I Can't Make This Up and A Modest Proposal. They both communicated poverty with dark humor, and sometimes seeing things in a different form of humor make things more captivating to
