Of Haney's Essay: How Do You Tie Technology Into The Classroom

The essay by Haney brings to light many attributes that I want to address. Is she a professional? Does Haney exemplify effective teaching practices? Lastly, what is one question that I want to ask Haney? These topics are all areas that I will explore in more detail. Haney raises some good points and like most of us, appears to be in education for all of the right reasons. Haney is the true professional in so many ways. She is passionate about her work and her teaching goes beyond the walls of school. “Creating a space for Latina mothers and their children to value home and school literacies” (Haney 2014) is one small example of her reaching not only out to her students but making the learning environment expand to a whole culture. If all of my students went on to productive lives, I would lay my head down every night with a sense of a job well done. Many students can’t wait to become regular contributors to the workforce but I want my students to experience life as a student first and find that nice balance of living a fun filled childhood and learning responsibility. My one question to Haney would be this “How do you tie technology into your classroom?” This appears to be one area where she misses the mark. She does a fabulous job of using resources but with more schools becoming 1 on 1, to stay ahead of this you need to dive into the technology world and apply it to your classroom. She does not address this or how she would tie into it if she had the resource. In closing, Haney embraces all what an educator strives for and though not perfect, recognizes she is making an impact. I don’t see her as that educator that needs recognition for everything she implements but lets her actions speak for her. She should be proud of her work and contributions to the education

Morrison shows qualities of strengths, however, there also some weaknesses in her ideas of teaching. One misconception that many people have about teachers is that their job stops once the dismissal bell sounds. However, that is by far the case. Part of Ms. Morrison’s motivation for becoming an educator is because she looks at her friends who are teachers and sees that they do not have to work evenings, weekends, or summers. There is a lack of understanding that many times teachers spend their evenings grading or lesson planning at home.…

Her main concern is how that the so-called betterment of schooling is slowly sapping the enthusiasm of both teachers and students alike and driving education into the ground by the government and privatized organizations attempting too quickly to impose changes and idealistic shortcuts to improvement; after all “in education, there are no shortcuts, utopias, and no silver bullets. For certain, there are no magic feathers that enable elephants to fly” (Ravitch, pg. 3), meaning that planning and implementing ideas for education is not easy; no one person or group can make changes to such a large system overnight. Her answer to this decline of quality education is to “turn [the] attention to improving the schools, infusing them with the substance of genuine learning, and reviving the conditions that make learning possible” (pg. 242), such as putting the emphasis on curriculum once more instead systems of accountability and standardized testing. An actual goal needs to put back into the education system, not just test…

The article talks about how “she” in the past didn’t really think she could teach well. Ut after meeting with a fellow teacher it seems as she has decided to work out of her normal range, to ty and better herself as teacher. “Lasting change in teacher practice is difficult because it expects that teachers challenge and reconstruct deeply embedded practices and beliefs (Borko & Putnam, 1996; Pennington, 2005). For Grace, a third-grade teacher, practitioner research with the Triad Teacher Researchers (TTR) provided a space for her to change beliefs and practices about being a teacher” (Vetter, 2012). Teachers I think can teach if they feel they have the support of fellow administration or teachers.…

For a long time, teaching was, and still is in some parts of the world, seen as a deficit model system. A system that portrayed the idea that student’s minds needed to be filled with the wisdom, insight, and knowledge provided by the teachers. Maureen Joy’s staff fights this deficit model every day using simple methods that every school could implement, but for some odd reason, doesn’t. In the 21st century, the idea of a multicultural classroom seems like normal scenario.…

The fluffy, pristine white sheep prances on a vibrant green background, their little black faces lifting upwards and the shimmering grass swaying by their small feet. While Kevin Day proudly wears his favorite printed sheep tie to work at All Saints’ Day School, he emulates a shepherd as he leads by example and practices what he preaches to both his students and his peers. Not only does he speak in church, but Mr. Day also preaches and teaches through the way he lives his life. As both a history and religion teacher, Day tries to “spread the word of the gospel, but not necessarily using words.” Despite being a relatively new citizen of Carmel, Day is known throughout the peninsula for his voracious appetite for learning, unquenchable need…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

Life can be a hassle in moments when least expected, lives can make 360 degree turns in a matter of time, and the pursuit of happiness grows with time. Imagine waking up at four in the morning feeling drowsy from yet another sleepless night just to get ready, sometimes grabbing the first thing you see to eat or perhaps nothing at all, then rushing off to catch the bus in the cold, unprepared for the random weather change, or in a rush trying to beat the traffic so you don’t get counted tardy. In today’s society, this is the typical morning of the average high school student. They spend countless hours of their days to find a balance in their lives worrying about deadlines and getting to class on time. If you think about it, the average student usually ends up getting little to no…

Michelle Rhee – Erikson’s Generativity versus stagnation Michelle Rhee is a phenomenal educator and a reformer who dared the odds to bring about unprecedented improvement in the education system of the public schools district in Washington D.C. Erikson’s generativity versus stagnation stage describes the characteristics of middle-age adults between the age of forties through sixties. When a middle-age adult makes a significant contribution to the development of the society by training and mentoring children and younger people (Boyd, 2015, p. 400). Michelle exemplified Erikson’s generativity in contrast to stagnation which is an attitude of disconnect from the community in which a person lives.…
