On page 89 in E.L. Konigsburg's Novel ‘The View From Saturday’, the character ‘Ethan’ made the statement “Had I gained something at Sillington House? Or had I lost something there? The answer was yes.”

It means that Ethan had gained knowledge and friends (Noah, Nadia and Julian) but lost his not-very-social side (which is good, not bad). Ethan Sketches (draws) this conclusion because he recognises that he has made friends (which, as far as I know, he hasn’t had much luck with earlier).
