In Ambrose Bierce’s short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, Ambrose adequately uses the literary device of foreshadowing. Ambrose constantly hints at Peyton Farquhar’s, the protagonist’s, future. Ambrose often mentions that Peyton’s neck is continuously aching, signifying that Farquhar still has the noose tied around his neck. Although Ambrose hints at Farquhar’s death many times, the hints are so subtle that they go unnoticed. As Peyton is standing on the bridge looking down at the water Ambrose says, “How slowly it appeared to move!
