Many would argue that the arrival of the messenger has a greater effect on the play. The messenger carried the news of Polybus, Oedipus' adoptive father's death, "Disposed by death my lady [Jocasta]. He passed away" (Sophocles 21). The messenger told Jocasta that Polybus died due to natural causes. The messenger also revealed Oedipus' true identity, "Because Polybus was no relative of yours" (Sophocles 23). The messenger exposed that Polybus and Oedipus has no relation. The messenger claimed that Oedipus was a gift to Polybus from him [messenger]. After the revelation Questions filled Oedipus's mind, he wanted to know how was he found and who were his true parents.
