Oedipus the King represents an interesting sense of irony and justice. One could say that his entire life was an injustice, since he has a vocabulary consisting of ten words when he was sent to his death by his parents. Not only was he too young to be feared, but alternative measures could have been taken to prevent the prophecy that would doom Oedipus’ parents. Despite the unfortunate events of Oedipus’ young life, he grew to become a greatly admired hero, especially since he saved the city of Thebes from the Sphinx, a threatening creature who would not stop terrorizing the city until someone solved its riddle.…

Oedipus the King unfurls as a murder riddle, a political spine chiller, and a mental whodunit. All through this mythic story of patricide and inbreeding, Sophocles accentuates the incongruity of a man resolved to find, uncover, and rebuff a professional killer, who ends up being himself. Mindful that a loathsome revile has occurred for Thebes, he sends his brother by marriage, Creon, to look for the exhortation of Apollo. Creon illuminates Oedipus that the revile will be lifted if the killer of Laius—the previous lord—is found and arraigned. Laius was killed numerous years prior at a junction.…

Oedipus and Herakles were two of the greatest ancient Greek heroes to ever live. They are famous for having saved many people but learn, in the course of their respective plays, that without conscious intent they have committed terrible crimes. They were both prophesized to have a burdensome future before or after their births and they rely on these fates to predict the outcome of their lives. The two scenes, lines 1298-1530 in Oedipus the King and lines 1121-1419 in Herakles, depict the aftermath of the two tragic events and how the characters were effected by them. Although Herakles was greatly changed by his tragedy, Oedipus had a truly life altering crisis.…

The expectations people had put upon me had gotten more difficult to live up to. I remember when my father first told me they were sending me to another kingdom to live with my soon to be husband, I threw a fit, I argued, and I had risen my voice to him. It was the worst night of my life, for I was punished, and taught who rules the house hold, and who truly has a power and a voice. Ever since then I learned to keep my mouth shut and follow orders from the man of the house.…

The Efficacy of the 1957 film Oedipus Rex to Convey Sophocles’ Intended Meaning The William Butler Yeats adaptation of the play, Oedipus the King, directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, is said to provide the most realistic viewing experience compared to what one would’ve witnessed in Sophocles’ day. The Stratford Shakespearean Festival Foundation successfully produces a piece that stays true to the genre of Greek drama and tragedy; the regal, yet, expressive, way in which the actors spoke, the exaggerated movements of their bodies, and the minimal lighting and props are all contributing elements. Despite the play being a shorter and more concise version, Yeats’ translation and Guthrie’s stage production effectively convey the same ideas and themes—the…
