Jocasta Confusion: Should We Pity Or Loathe Her? Throughout history femininity has been looked down upon, while masculinity has been praised. Even in today’s world, women are blamed for things that aren’t their fault, while men are not held accountable for their wrongdoings. (A good example of this is women being blamed for getting raped.) Ancient Greece was no exception. During this period in time, women had a very limited role in society, that mostly consisted of being a supportive wife and mother. In “Oedipus The King,” an ancient Greek play by Sophocles, Jocasta has the ability to be both a mother and wife. However once the audience realizes that she is the mother and wife to Oedipus, she is looked upon with disgust and pity. Jocasta
