Through the interactive oral presentations, the class learned the many components that combined to form Oedipus the King and other Greek plays from the time. The myths that came before Oedipus helped lay the path that Oedipus the King would follow. These different myths explain how Thebes and the Oracle were developed. This information is pertinent in the understanding of the impact the play had on Greek culture. The myths following Oedipus were also necessary in the lasting impact of Oedipus the King in Greek Culture and all around the world. The presentation that covered the arts of Athens was informative in the fact that another writer was discussed. Pericles was a similar writer during the time Sophocles was writing about Oedipus. Pericles was responsible for a famous funeral oration that explained important Athenian Values. Oedipus did not share these traditional values, that helped to set him apart from other comparable pieces.
Additionally, the presentations discussed contextual components of Oedipus the King. A group of individuals presented on the irony used in the play and how it expands the story. Tyrannos is a Greek word that can be defined as a ruler who did not earn power by birthright but seized it by overthrowing an existing ruler or by being elected. Tyrannos led to the more modernized word, tyrant, which shares the same meaning. Knowing this helped the audience realize a broader irony throughout the play. Oedipus was not only a tyrant but also a king by birthright.
By listening to other interactive oral presentations I believe that I, as well as my classmates have a better understanding of not only the play, Oedipus the King but also Greek culture and writing as a
